Lilly and Davis' Story

Lilly Mae and Davis Anthony were born on Sunday, December 4th. They were born at 25 weeks and 5 days of gestation.

Lilly was born first at 9:56PM. She weighed 1 pound and 14 ounces and was 13.25 inches long. Her head was 24 cm in circumference (slightly smaller than a baseball).

Davis was born at 10:07PM... 11 minutes after his sister (something she'll never let him forget). He weighed 1 pound and 13 ounces. He was 13 inches long and had the same size head as his sister.

Both were taken to the NICU directly after delivery and are expected to be there until their original due date, March 12th (that's exactly 100 days in the NICU!)

Please keep these little ones in your thoughts and prayers and hopefully we will get to bring them home sooner!

Day 6 - 12/9/11

Lilly snuggling with mommy!

Momma and Davis snuggling!

Davis: "Why do you keep flashing that camera light in my eyes???"

Today was a good day and a bad day. The bad first... They found PDAs in both Lilly and Davis. A PDA is when a small vessel runs between two of the main heart vessels (from my vast medical knowledge and training, it is between one of the blue ones and one of the red ones). This little vessel is there to bypass blood from the lungs while the babies are in the womb (they get oxygen from mom and their little longs are full of fluids in the womb). When a full term baby is born and takes that first deep breath and cries, it signals to the body to close this vessel. It is common in preemies that this vessel is open, so they have to give some medicine to help close it. They are getting a total of 3 doses of ibuprofen spaced 24 hours apart. This should close the vessel and allow them to get better oxygen saturation from their lungs.

On the positive side, both babies got to snuggle with mommy for the first time today. They call this kangaroo care. There are a bunch of studies that show skin to skin contact between baby and parent is great for the baby. They get better sleep and is great for bonding. Babies get 1 hour, separately, to snuggle on your chest. Both Lilly and Davis handled the snuggle time very well! Mom did ok... her butt was sore for sitting in one position for so long.

Also, Granny (daddy's mom...)got to meet her grandbabies today! She said she thinks they're cutie pies!
